A James Beard Award is one of the most highly sought after accolades in the food universe—the 2020 semifinalists in the “Restaurant and Chef” category were announced this week. The James Beard Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to elevate chefs and other leaders in American food culture.
“Anointed the ‘Dean of American cookery’ by the New York Times in 1954, James Beard laid the groundwork for the food revolution that has put America at the forefront of global gastronomy,” according the organization’s website. “Beard nurtured a generation of American chefs and cookbook authors who have changed the way we eat.”
So here we are, the 30th anniversary of the awards, with a new generation of culinary talent to discover. This list arose from an open call for nominations in October 2019. Entries (and input from 250 volunteer panelists from around the country) were filtered through the the Restaurant and Chef Committee before the composition of a semifinalist list. Then the list was voted on by 600+ judges. This same group will select the winners, to be celebrated at The James Beard Awards Gala on May 4, 2020 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
